Strength and conditioning (S&C) involves the targeted training of specific exercises to improve athletic performance and prevent injury. S&C is not designed to make you a world-class weightlifter, but rather to help you excel at your sport. We select exercises and methods based on the physical demands of hockey and ringette, all to help you elevate your game.
Each session will start with a dynamic warm-up including agility, activation, and mobility work. From there, we’ll start the main component of our session such as speed or strength.
Running shoes, athletic clothing, and water. We’ll provide everything else you’ll need for the session.
Strength training is beneficial for the growth of young athletes! It is critical, however, that the athletes receive proper guidance to create good habits and movement patterns.
Sport-specific plyometrics and agility training can be incorporated into your off-ice training program to complement on-ice development. Younger athletes should focus on learning proper technique and mechanics. As athletes develop, more reactive/game-like agility drills can be utilized to challenge them.
A well-developed strength training program will translate to improved strength on the puck. Every athlete should put an emphasis on training core strength and stability. Individuals can then identify other areas where they need more development and customize their strength training program accordingly.
There are many tools available to athletes to assist them in recovering from the physical demands of their sport, including contrast water therapy, compression therapy, self-myofascial release, and others. These tools are all useful, but none are as important as a quality sleep routine, proper nutrition, and enough scheduled recovery time within their training program (in-season or in the off-season).
